Batwoman's Return Empty
PostSubject: Batwoman's Return   Batwoman's Return I_icon_minitimeSun Nov 28, 2010 3:38 pm

So.. here I am. Living in a small town, and I go to my fairly unknown, local comic book store and can't find issue #0 of Batwoman anywhere. It was Saturday, the issue came out that same Wednesday, how in the world could they have not gotten in a shipment?

So I asked, and the manager said they immediately sold out that same day. Even the variant's sold.

To my surprise, people do love Batwoman. I was immediately attracted to her demeanor in Detective Comics. Anyone else eagerly await for issue #1 of Batwoman? You have to admit she is a pretty bad-a character.

I'm the same - I forgot to put on my comic store list and it sold out.

Batwoman seems to be enjoying the massive creative limelight at the moment. I'm excited to see where this title goes.

I really enjoyed Grag Ruka's run on Detective Comics and I think J.H. Williams run will be an enjoyable read. Williams' artwork is just amazing and I think Morrison's best chapter in his Batman run was with that 3-parter with Williams. Amy Reeder is a good artiest as well.

Yeah, that's what really caught my eye on Batwoman. Williams is ... remarkable. He really captured her essence, it really suits her as a character. I'm just a little skeptic on this new artist doing Kate Kane's side though.
I noticed her variant, and she definitely draws Kate differently than Williams.

But I'm sure I'll be pleased in the end, and the two art styles will contrast each other equally.

If you listened to the most recent podcast (which posted up recently, have a listen!) you'll know my love and admiration for Kate and Batwoman her book is very quickly becoming my favorite book behind Detective and Batman. She is definately an interesting charachter because unlike the other characters in the Bat-Family Batwoman wasn't necessarily born out of tragedy. Her Tragedy is outweighed by her incredible guilt over her self-imposed/idealized failures. Anyways, Amy Reeder definately doesn't fail in the Kate sequences and I don't think I need to say anything about J.H. Williams. As for running out of copies at the comic store, I put Batwoman on my pull list before hand and I had a nice shining copy of #0 waiting for me on the day it came out because I know my comic shop would run out, because of the fact that they literally only order 2-3 copies of Detective (which isn't necessarily a good thing, if your a smaller book)to put on their shelves, they dont even stock Sirens or BOP, and I know this because I asked which is why I put all the bat-books on my pull list.

Man, I was completely captivated by her. I love her. Well.. I thought her sister and her mom.. that was a tragedy. I can see how that would be a motivation for her to do what she does. She's pretty realistic in some aspects, and I really actually look up to Kate. She's a strong woman, and is an incredible person.
And I want to listen to those podcasts of yours! I'm so lazy and forget. My first one will be yours then, sir! Hah. I probably should ask the comic shop owner to reserve me a copy.
I really want to collect the variants and the regular covers because, frankly, the art is just too good to not have in possession. I can't wait to see what Amy Reeder's style in action (I get issue #0 tomorrow!!). I really enjoy Detective and Batman Inc. looks pretty awesome now.
But Williams was practically born to do Batwoman.

I agree, I was kinda surprised that he said she had no tragedies in her life...I feel like that's a pretty big deal.

Yeah. It really motivated her to do the things she was doing in the military, and post-military. And help her develop that relationship she has with her dad. It really shaped her as a character. Gave her great definition.

PostSubject: Re: Batwoman's Return   Batwoman's Return I_icon_minitimeWed Dec 01, 2010 11:37 pm

I mean I guess. I was just thinking of it as yes there was sudden tragedy in her life there is no doubt that and while I didnt say their wasnt any tragedy in her life I think her guilt over her supposed failures kind of outweighs her tragedy. After her supposed tragedy she was incredibly lost, she knew what she wanted to do but she was lost before and after. She wanted to join the Marines but she was kicked out because she was a lesbian, because of her pride which later gave way to anguish and depression because she failed to fulfill her (dare I say misplaced?) "dream" to serve her country, she started to drink heavily and was in a horrible relationship with Montoya who ends up leaving her. She stumbles out of the bar and is attacked when Batman saves her and it was only then that she found her way.

I don't know if that makes any sense or if that's politically correct but thats the way I like to think about it even if it is wrong, it would be pretty funny if I missed the point entirely Laughing

If you think about it though, Dane, Bruce went through a similar journey to become Batman. His parents were killed YEARS before he became Batman, and he was kinda lost for a while before he came up with the idea to avenge his parents. Granted, he didn't get to the point where he was kicked out of the military and became a drunk, but it's still a bit similar.

Batman saved her? I thought she fended for herself and she just saw him watching (like he was going to step in), which gave her inspiration to become Batwoman. I don't like saying she was kicked out... She was give a chance to stay in. But as you stated, her pride was great and she left. Which you have to admit, is pretty "ballsy". She left and let the girl she was having relations to stay inside the military. She's definitely caring.. and not as senseless as she comes off to be. She brutally attacks her enemies and takes them down. She doesn't lighten the fight even if she has the advantage.

Which I like. AND I finally got Batwoman #0 today! The comic shop only got two in... So lucky I am, but no variants. I guess they didn't get them in...

I think what Batwoman and Batman fight for, are similar. Not to be a victim. Bruce Wayne was a victim. And Kate Kane was a victim. The both fight for a semi-similar cause and fiery passion.

Yeah. I'm just greedy. Haha.
Amy Reeder... definitely is a style I am not accustomed to. She verily contrast with Williams's work. It goes from gritty, dark, realistic, to bright, smooth, clean, "white" fresh feeling. But... Amy definitely does not understand what Kate likes to wear. Elegy made her appear really punkish and rockabilly-esque. In Batwoman, she looks like a college student who studies all time.

I'll give Reeder some time. Where did she come from anyways?

Her art is definitely different. But she grew on me while I read the issue. As for where she came from I think she did some work for vertigo last year and she did some manga work which is what she's known for. I think she talked to didio who gave her the gig

Yeah. Her art definitely gave off a graphic novel feeling, you know? I mean, I really like how she drew Kate (like her eyes and expression are more lively than in Elegy) but I'm still unsteady. Vertigo comics has some great artist. But my store never really stocks up on their stuff, besides Watchmen..

So did your comic shop just get in a shipment of the book or something or did they sell out? Anyways I think I like Williams Kate better. Although Reeders offering is strong

You really can't. When I carried the comic book around (people have no idea that two artists could work together on a book.. Gee...), they even said they like the pages that had Williams work more so than Reeder's.

They get shipments every week or so, and they only got in 2 Batwoman's, 0 variants. I didn't ask. And the guy didn't call me or even slightly recognize me. Ha... :C
But he only gets in mainstream stuff really.

I'm definitely getting both. I have to on that one. The variant for #1 is that picture of a medium close-up on her face, correct? It looks like Williams's style to be honest.

Splurge a little! It wouldn't hurt to save some pocket change and get another issue to put up and save.

Good news guys.
I just gave my boyfriend all of the comics Batwoman was featured in Detective Comics and issue #0 of Batwoman (also including 52: Week Eleven, which he disliked. . . ), so we got a new admirer! But that's awful on my end because he wants to buy issue #1 on the 23rd of November, and I see me a small fight enrolling over who gets the only issue my store will probably have! Hahee!

Oh well. Anywho, he even agrees that he enjoys Williams's style over Reeder's. And you can agree, I mean, you really get wrapped up in Williams's style and since he was doing all the art of her's in the beginning. It's hard to transition..

He did bring up a good question, one that I probably thought of but disregarded quickly or just merely forgotten, do you think we will see more of Alice? I mean, that was her sister, her first major enemy, and a huge important piece of her life walking on two legs. And it seems as if the Religion of Crime is Batwoman's main adversary.
