PostSubject: Batman, rumors, Justice League.   Tue Aug 10, 2010 7:09 am

I thought I'd talk about the fact that Marvel's Avengers film has made some news, nothing significant just the actors at comic con on stage and a teaser promo. I believe this was the fuel for a rumor comicbookmovie.com posted saying that an Justice League is to be started without involvement of Batman or Superman and just Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. The first major responses have been "How stupid are WB/DC?! Why isn't Batman in it?"

I've been so confused as to why have people assumed this was official confirmation. The reaction from just rumors have been so frequent on websites whenever it's posted. It seems some fans are so desperate for DC movie news they are responding to even B.S. rumors even. Even before this obvious fake news I read calls from posters that say ignore Christopher Nolan's rules about his Batman being the only hero to demands he should be fired for not letting Batman and now Superman live in a DC movie universe.

This seems to stem from Marvel's attempts at a Marvel movie universe and The Avengers movie (something I have doubts will even get made.) I think maybe the green eyed monster is rearing it's head the slower rate of news has made DC fans upset. Even Geoff Johns was the target of some internet attacks if we recall Wonder Con this year when asked if there would be a Justice League film he responded "Ask me again in San Diego". I am sure this was a humorous response yet when no news came this past San Diego he was under fire. Never mind that it takes years to make a movie sometimes and DC Entertainment formed late last year it didn't matter to some posters.

What I am not seeing is skepticism of a JLA movie even being made. With a current unavailability of Batman and Superman one Green Lantern movie and the early stages of a Flash movie it's not something we may see soon. So why are rumors on websites and demand from fans so common or the assumption a JLA film is even planned?

I want to know some others opinions. Thoughts on if there is a JLA film sans Batman and Superman? Opinions on a JLA film? Post bellow.

I dont know why the people are demanding a jla movie. Batman has just returned to the movies, superman is about to get rebooted and green lantern hasnt even been released yet. I think a jla movie is out of the question.
Just because marvel is doing a team movie doesnt mean that warner brothers has to do one too. We dont even know if the avengers movie will be a success!

Bravo, BadSoul, Bravo! I think what DC fans have to realize is that DC Comics Characters (other than Batman and Christopher Reeves' Superman) have yet to be established in mainstream media. Whereas Marvel Characters (both the X-Men & Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk, & Spidey) have been decent; at least, box office successes. Outside of Batman, nothing has gone on with a major DC Character since the 80's.

To rush into an JLA movie at this early stage would be foolish.....allow for another Batman movie, a couple of GL movies, a rebooted Superman movie (NOT directed by a dud like Bryan Singer), a Flash or Wonder Woman movie, etc.....THEN talk about maybe doing a JLA movie, but until some of our beloved characters are established among the mainstream non-comic book readers, it would just be a waste of money.

Also, please consider the numbers in the comics industry right now......Batman & Green Lantern (& maybe Flash, time will tell) are holding up the DC franchise at the moment. Their related books ("family" titles, if you will) are what is keeping DC afloat. Superman, Wonder Woman, JLA, JSA, Titans, Green Arrow, etc. aren't even close (combined!) to the Batman and GL titles. I'm not saying they aren't good reads, but lets be honest......if comic book readers aren't buying these other characters in sufficient numbers, why would DC want to throw $100 million into a movie with them starring in it? Aquaman & Martian Manhunter don't even have titles, and they were both "dead" until very recently.

When it comes to recognizable, marketable characters for the mainstream....Marvel seems to be doing a much better job than DC. That is not a "knock" on DC characters, just being honest. I love and prefer DC to Marvel any day of the week, but it's somewhat difficult for a non-comic book reader to follow a lot of DC characters, with their intricate origins and history (as opposed to Marvel characters who often have very little continuity and whose origins can be summarized in a sentence). If DC and the DC fans stay patient and build our beloved characters in the mainstream the right way (not trying to rush it), then I think they can build a very strong base for a future JLA movie franchise.

Well, based on track records, team-based movies have a history of not doing quite as well as solo superhero movies. Look at Marvel's Fantastic Four and X-Men, both these movies was just above average in terms of box-office performance. It's good that Marvel is going ahead with the Avengers movie but I don't think DC should follow suit. Warner Bros and DC Comics have always been extremely careful when it comes to giving their characters more exposure than needed. For me, I'm really quite happy with that.

If Warner Bros does decide to do a Justice League movie, it will most probably happen sometime in the next 5 years or so. Bear in mind that we are going to get a Green Lantern movie, Chris Nolan's sequel to The Dark Knight, a Superman reboot and I heard they are planning to do a Wonder Woman movie sometime in the near future.

To be honest, I'm kinda disappointed DC isn't making any movement towards a unified DCU in the films. I'm guessing the big reason for now is because they want to keep Chris Nolan happy, and he thinks that they should all be separate. But I love the little references in the recent Marvel films to their expanded universe, and it wouldn't hurt for DC to throw a few nods into the rest of the universe. In a draft of the script for Green Lantern the ring was supposed to find Clark Kent first in the Daily Planet office, before zooming off towards Hal Jordan. Supposedly that's been cut, and I'm disappointed. Even if they didn't have an actor for the Superman movie yet, having the ring hover around a guy at a desk, where we only see his back and the nameplate "Clark Kent" wouldn't hurt anything...but, whatever.

I do feel like we'll be getting a team-up film at some point, but I'm sure it won't be for quite some time. They want to keep Nolan happy until his trilogy is done, and that's fine because it will give them time to at least have Green Lantern and Superman's next film come out, if not a Flash or Wonder Woman or some other DC hero flick before they start on a team movie. I think that DC knows that it would be a huge mistake to rush out a Justice League movie, especially without their top two characters. I thank the stars every day that that "Justice League: Mortal" flick was never made.

@Mr.Vulture:

Well thank you, that was very kind of you.
I also agree with what you said. I think patience is a virtue when it comes to such things. Besides I think that dc and warner are trying to uphold a certain level of quality when it comes to comic adaptions now. After the dark knight, it became clear that crossovers and cameos while in theory popular won't sell tickets if the movie is crap. The dark knight was a self contained film. Nolan ignored the dcu and focused on making the best film possible while maintaining the distinct voice and integrity of the characters we have come to cherish. And that paid off hugely, the film was a huge critical and commercial success.

Would I want to see a JLA film? sure. But I rather see well made films that focus on one character than a rushed JLA movie.

True; but I don't feel like Marvel's past few films have sacrificed any quality for their few references and mentions.

putting a few references in such movies as wolverine, hulk or iron man 2 is not a big issue. These films are of disappointing quality (see rotten tomato ratings).

The dark knight however was an incredibly tightly scripted movie. Every shot was there for a reason and every line was integral to the overall plot. Putting references to other characters that dont even show up in the movie would have been a jarring experience. Also acknowledging other heroes in the dark knight would cause unnecessary questions. For example: the situation in the dark knight was so dire, why didn't hero x or hero y try to help the city and batman? What happens when batman is now a vigilante pursued by the law? will the other heroes that were referenced help the authorities to apprehend him or help batman? Why havent the heroes met after so much time? and so on..

Also acknowledging other superheroes in the dark knight would have sacrificed the authenticity of the world that Nolan and co created. Gotham in batman begins and the dark knight had such a realistic setting that the existence of other heroes in that world would have seemed unrealistic.

But the best argument against such crossovers came from Nolan himself when he stated that Bruce has created a symbol in the first movie. It is his original creation. If we take for granted that there are other superheroes in Nolan's world it would diminish Bruce's decision to wear a costume.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2008/10/christopher-n-2.html

And I agree completely. If superman was flying around, Bruce would have thought that the idea of a symbol and a costume is a good one and adapted it. Thus he wouldn't have gone on his journey and wouldn't have allied him self with Ras Alguhl, who was the first to inspire Bruce to create a symbol to fight crime.

First of all, Rotten Tomatoes is not all the top authority on what's a good movie and what isn't. I'll give you that Wolverine wasn't a great movie, and I'll half-accept that the Hulk wasn't good (as long as you're talking about Ang Lee's version; 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" was good), but Iron Man 2 was pretty awesome. Was it as great as the first one? No. But it was still a good flick.

And I get what you're saying about none of them matching up to the "quality" of the Dark Knight, but I don't feel like it would effect the quality of it to include a reference to the Daily Planet or something. I think they did actually mention one of the DCU cities at one point, and it wasn't a big deal. It was fun for the fans who got it, and didn't affect the quality of the movie. Even if you didn't like "The Incredible Hulk", having Steve Rogers' frozen body in the ice when they panned over the arctic didn't hurt it. Or when the Captain America shield showed up in the Iron Man films, it didn't change the movie, it was just a prop that was lying around.

The point is, even in the Marvel films they don't really reference other heroes out there, hurting the integrity of the character(s) being featured in their own film. Instead, they reference minor characters, places, and events that are part of the rest of their universe as a whole. You can think the films suck, that's your own opinion, but the little references, props and name drops didn't make the movie worse, only a little cooler for fans.
