BOOO! I don't care if they want to do something different, but you AT LEAST have to have a bit of the classic theme in there! It's so triumphant and classically Superman...I'll be bummed if it's not used at all. It's one of the few things Returns really did well.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Gary!! This has got to be a decision from some department head in L.A. for Warner Bros.! They Can't!! The music makes the movie!

Totally! I dont' care if they want to do something a little different, but if they just do a score similar to the Batman movies and leave out Williams' theme entirely, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. They better at least evoke the same feeling, like Smallville's "Superman" theme - triumphant, orchestral Americana.

Why would anyone, even Hans Zimmer, touch the Superman score?

But then again if you really want to pull at strings I guess you could say the same thing with the Danny Elfman Batman theme and The Dark Knight score by Zimmer, where Zimmer took the movie and made the music fit into it.

True...I hope it at least evokes the same sound and feel as the Williams score though.

Oh, I'm sure Zimmer wouldnt do such a stupid thing like that. You can't completely discard the Superman theme I think it has proven that it is too sacred and important to be thrown by the way side.

But like you said, they did the same thing with the Elfman Batman theme. Plus, Zimmer was talking about how he wants to reinvent it, and I'm sure the studio wants them to do everything they can to distance themselves from "Returns", which had a modified/updated Williams score. I just hope they don't do what Elfman did to Terminator Salvation's score and only have one piece with the "Duhdumdum duhdum" part in it and have it barely in the movie at all...It's just annoying.

I dont know, I dont see Zimmer completely removing John Williams original theme. It's too iconic even moreso than Elfman's Batman theme even though Elfman's was iconic in it's own right.

Apparently, it was all a rumor! Plus, Zimmer himself had this to say;

Claiming the rumor is "some dirty quote taken out of context," Zimmer affirms that he has no plans to score Superman, likening attempting to improve John Williams' original theme to "rewriting Beethoven’s ninth."

I'm so glad! I hope they leave that theme in there...

I was originally upset about this regarding the theme but after talking about it to my wife (she knows how passionate I am about film scores), I wouldn't mind Zimmer coming up with someting new...

Like Dane said, it worked for Batman Begins and the Dark Knight and added the icing to the cake for the movie. I know its iconic and my second fav theme in the whole world, but that's stuck with the Reeves Superman era now... new times, new theme I'm thinking...

As long as it sounds iconic and triumphant and all that, I'm happy. Although, I have to admit, I'll be disappointed if it doesn't at least sound orchestral...like the Smallville "Superman" theme does!

That actually makes a lot of sense considering that the new Superman movie is a reboot. And the fact that the theme was from the Christopher Reeve era, it makes sense to use a new theme in a new kind of world of Superman.

You two quit it with your logic!!! Haha, I know it makes sense...and deep down, as long as the movie's good, I really won't mind it as much as long as it's good music. I just really love that score...

I had a feeling that it was rumor--they typically at least have the whole cast settled before they start looking for people like composers.

But it's going to happen at some point, though--someone's going to have to create a new theme and sound for these new series of movies, and honestly, Zimmer wouldn't be too terrible a choice in that regard--after all, he was able to create a good score for the Batman movies despite Elfman being such a huge musical voice in that series.

In the grand scheme of things, I'm more worried about rumors like Superman being "CG-enhanced" and what exactly that means than who they're getting to score the flick.

Yeah, like I said, as long as it's a good score that is triumphant and fits the character, I'll be ok with it; Unlike Elfman's Terminator Salvation score, which I hated...

And I'm not really worried about it, yet. Barely anything is remotely confirm-able yet, so I'm not too worried about those CG rumors or whatnot. I'm basically happy they're even making a Superman film, and won't be too concerned with rumored details until the casting starts.
